3 awesome books for landlocked SUP:ers

3 awesome books for landlocked SUP:ers

Head’s up SUP:ers and yogis in love with the ocean! If you’re not getting your Stand Up Paddling or SUP yoga on this fall and you´re longing and dreaming about the ocean, what can be better than a great book filled with inspiration and research on your favorite topic. Water and life.

I always carry a book with me. For long flights, a well-deserved rest in my sofa or garden, when Instagram doesn´t adjust my need for inspiration, or basically for whenever I feel like reading. Which is essentially most of the time.

Reading is always available

Surfable waves or perfect flat water conditions for SUP yoga are limited resource. Reading is always available though. As is my resource page. Here, I´ve created a list with recommendations including three of my favorite ocean books, to help you keep the stoke during onshore afternoons and to provide you with great reading for landlocked days.

Make sure to hit up the SUP Yoga Pro “bookshop” for more of my recommendations. You won´t actually buy the books from me, but you´ll find links to where you can easily buy them.

The following list is incomplete, as there are many more books for ocean lovers. These represent my current favorites, ranked in no particular order.

Get these books and you´ve got yourself covered for the fall!

1. THE FEAR PROJECT: WHAT OUR MOST PRIMAL EMOTION TAUGHT ME ABOUT SURVIVAL, SUCCESS, SURFING … AND LOVE
By Jaimal Yogis

Uncertainty is part of life. As is fear. A huge inner roadblock, and a topic I´m hugely curious about. If you want freedom from fear (which is kind of impossible), you need to learn how to work with it. But first, learn about what it is.

In my experience, fear is feelings of being out of control, causing anxiety that in turn can cause us to react in different ways. There are many ways fear creeps into our lives and there are as many ways to move past it. Both yoga and the ocean have fear aspects, and even though this book isn´t about yoga, it´s highly useful in that area. Jaimal Yogis goes in depth with fear. The most common emotion you can experience, and what often holds you back. Yogis weaves together stories of his own about fear, the ocean and surfing – fused with neuroscience and wisdom. I´m just about to read this book my third time. Each time I read this book I want to go beyond my own comfort zone. On and off the board. I hope you´ll find it useful too.

2. BLUE MIND: THE SURPRISING SCIENCE THAT SHOWS HOW BEING NEAR, IN, ON, OR UNDER WATER CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER, HEALTHIER, MORE CONNECTED, AND BETTER AT WHAT YOU DO
By Wallace J. Nichols

Why does your brain love the ocean? Why are you captivated by the big blue? What draws humans to the sea? The reasons go beyond evolution. In this book Wallace J. Nichols shares his experience being a human lab rat, measuring his brain´s response to the ocean. By wearing a cap functioning as a nerve center of a mobile EEG unit while entering the ocean, he explores the questions above, to study and understand the human mind and our relationship with water. This book is bursting with research and insight in a fusion that made me realize exactly why I´ve chosen my paddlers path. A fascinating study of how water changes your life. I´m in awe.

3. THE CODE: THE POWER OF ”I WILL”
By Shaun Tomson

We all live in a challenging sea and our attitude towards those challenges defines who we are, and how we live our lives.

 – Shaun Tomson

A surfing legend shares lessons on life. Lessons useful and applicable for yoga as much as SUP and surf. Lessons on how to turn hope into action. To say them out loud and make a promise to no one but yourself. Faith, creativity and determination. Stories to inspire you to believe in yourself and shape your life through 12 stories based on the power of “I Will”.

This book inspired me to turn my hopes into action. It taught me how to mind surf when I´m nowhere near the ocean and my ocean craving gets tough. Lots of practical advice for power and growth. All you need is to be encouraged to find your voice. And commit, even in the darkest times.

1. I Will Be Myself
2. I Will Dream
3. I Will Face My Fears
4. I Will Never Give Up
5. I Will Create
6. I Will Heal
7. I Will Pray
8. I Will Give
9. I Will Make a Difference
10. I Will Imagine
11. I Will Have Faith
12. I Will Share Stories
